The Big One

I posted a week ago about the oh-600-or-so smallish earthquakes rumbling off the Oregon Coast. Now here’s an article telling me that an earthquake slated to register 9.0 on the richter scale is a-comin’. Makes me think I should really look into getting that home-owner’s insurance we’ve been putting off.

BTW - that’s bigger than the [...]

To Serve In Heaven

For the past month or so I’ve been reading through Trade Paperback Novels for “Fallen Angel” written by Peter David. It’s a dark, gritty and noir-ish tale about a fallen angel who takes up residence in a city called Bette Noire - which is one of three cities or so that the world is apparently [...]

Quitters and Lions.

Time for another round of Comic Book/Graphic Novel dorkiness. Today’s installment is featuring yet another Harvey Pekar offering: “The Quitter.” At this point - I’m not sure if I’m on some Harvey Pekar kick - or if the Multnomah County Library is. I snagged this from my local branch while tooling through the graphic novel [...]

Alas, Poor Yorick.

If you were the last man on earth…

Never has this phrase been answered so completely and uniquely by - well - anything.
While the “last man on earth” topic has been explored by movies and I think - an episode of the Twilight Zone, as far as I know, this is a somewhat unique plot-line for [...]

The Earth Moves

And several HUNDRED earthquakes “swarm” on the Oregon Coast in the last 10 days - just a skip-hop-jump away from Newport, Oregon.

Trust me - it happened!
The troubling thing about this article - to me - are the use of the keywords “unusual” and “swarm.” Swarm makes me think of bees or…locusts…or something very alive and [...]

The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay

This week I didn’t have a chance to read any graphic novels, because I was entrenched, and firmly dedicated to the reading of one book. And I finally completed all 639 pages yesterday, just before the power went out (but that’s a whole other story).

Yes - it is done. The winding story of two Jewish [...]

Say Goodbye to Pacific NW Salmon

A moment of silence for the delicious, relatively in-expensive Pacific NW Salmon I have come to enjoy on a regular basis through my local Costco store.

And here’s why.
I’m going to go out on a limb here and compare the declining Chinook population to the bats and bees dying off too. Seriously. I’ll say it again [...]

An Evening with Marjane Satrapi

Marjane Satrapi - author of Persepolis and several other fantastic “comic books” gave a lecture at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall Monday, April 7th, 2008 @ 7:30pm. Last night.
Through the awesome reminder of Savanna - I was able to secure tickets around 9:00am yesterday morning. Because I am cheap, and I didn’t figure on getting [...]

Electric Cars Will Save The World!! Again…

Feeling cynical…and this article didn’t do much to cheer up my Monday Morning blahs.
Here’s why:
GM had a completely electric, plug-in car, about 10 frickin’ years ago!
And California was also developing infrastructure to support these cars, until the lobbyists, the car companies, the un-informed public, and everyone else conspired to kill the electric car.
So - it sounds like it [...]

Graphic History

Originally I wanted to review three graphic novels/TPB’s a week - but clearly that is not going to happen. So - how about one? And if we’re all lucky - then maybe two or three?
This week’s entry is:

It’s another Harvey Pekar deal - but instead of being biographical or autobiographical - this is a little [...]
