Say Goodbye to Pacific NW Salmon

A moment of silence for the delicious, relatively in-expensive Pacific NW Salmon I have come to enjoy on a regular basis through my local Costco store.

And here’s why.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and compare the declining Chinook population to the bats and bees dying off too. Seriously. I’ll say it again – I don’t mind a few Polar Bears…but Salmon? They’re cute AND delicious. They shouldn’t be THAT HARD to keep alive either.

This is a huge blow to the Pacific NW economy, especially in Oregon. Families and fishermen who are heavily invested in this industry are going to see the worst of it – and this will extend out to grocery stores and fish markets as well. Bad, bad news all around.

Environmental issues, including “global climate change” are said to be factors, but no one is willing to come right out and say it. Apparently the Spring Salmon population has been declining for the last three years or so – and it looks like it’s only getting worse.

I want to support the fishing homies, and I want to support the salmons…but it looks like this whole situation is lose-lose. Even laying off salmon fishing for this season does not guarantee there will be enough for next season.

I guess I’ll just have to savor that bag in the freezer, cause it looks like Chinook is going out of style. :(

Much Love, Mindy C
