Harry Potter and The Watchmen

Warner Brothers studios, after releasing two amazing trailers which had the fan-worlds buzzing, was sitting pretty two weeks ago.

Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince:

The Watchmen

Now, not so much.

Warner Brothers is suffering the results of it’s own hubris.

Firstly – the wild seven month release date time leap for the Half Blood Prince (HBP). In a country where Entertainment is news and news is entertainment and both are DEADLY SERIOUS to the masses, this is the equivalent of Global Warming…meaning that some people (like myself) want to believe that this doesn’t exist.

Hence, the Release Date petitions. I found at least three of them. Kudos to you if you can spot more.

Petition 1

Petition 2

Petition 3

But, they never intended to cause umbrage (heh, Doloris) with HP fans. Surely not. You can read the the WB President’s statement here and read the reaction of hardcore HP lovers.

Secondly is the most recently released news that FOX (those greedy bastards) are taking WB and the Watchmen to task, claiming they own all rights to the franchise. It’s all sticky, legal nastiness you can read about here.

Of course, like true believers in Democracy and justice, there is a petition a-circulatin’ about this flick too:

Of course, some folks doubt the validity and effectiveness of the petition. I’m always a wee bit skeptical myself. But it never hurts to throw your name up there, if it might help. It does still helps many to believe that we do live in a Democracy where the voice of the people matter. Unfortunately, money speaks louder than words.

Of course – if you really wanted to make a difference, you’d have to boycott many FOX and WB sources of entertainment, which would equate you to something of a leper or social pariah in many circles.

It would serve both these major studios right if boot-leg copies end up leaked all over the internet. In fact, I honestly hope they do. The masses demand to be entertained. And if we cannot satisfy our lust for teenage wizards and aging superheroes, we will seek BLOODY vengeance.

Through well organized petitions.

I don’t mock, honestly! But so far, petitions haven’t done much to move these behemoths about OTHER IMPORTANT MATTERS (like poverty, the environment, etc).

But you know, keep fighting the good fight. And while you’re at it, enjoy this.

Much Love, Mindy C

Cool! I hadn’t seen the Harry Potter one! That’s rad. (Although i realize the whole point of this entry is complaining about the fact that it’s been delayed, so yeah, that’s a bummer.) Also, the link to the mashup was fucking fantastic.

Insofar as the delays…I’m not exactly on the same page. I guess I’m not looking forward to HP as much as you, and I’m not really believing that Watchmen is going to get held up.

I guess if it does, then I’ll have to change my tune.

Thanks for the thoughts – I know Dan doesn’t really believe it will be held up either.

I think some executives at FOX saw the trailer and thought “Holy shit, this movie is going to make piles of money!” and then remembered that the studio once held the rights to this property, but was too addle brained to actually do anything about it.

I believe Watchmen will eventually see the light of day, but may be held up in litigation for awhile.

As to HP – the only logical reason is money. I’m a bit bummed that it was pushed back…but it’ll eventually be released too.

I think the most amusing part is just the shitty few weeks WB is no doubt having, with rabid fans starting petitions and emailing them.

I was also amused by the way folks lobby for their entertainment, almost more aggressively and passionately than important social/political issues. Ya dig? 😉
