Free Comic Book Day 2010 Portland Preview

THIS Saturday, May 1st is Free Comic Book Day, an annual event in which local shops hand out special comic book editions designed by a wide range of publishers…for FREE. It’s a great, economical way to get non-comic fans hooked – especially kids. It usually occurs the first Saturday in May, and it so happens to coincide this year with the first of the month (anyone else have that song stuck in their heads now?) Portland Comic Shops are hosting the following events…

– From 11am-7pm FREE books while supplies last

– 12-3pm, the shop will host artists and writers for signings:

– From 11am-7pm FREE books while supplies last

– From 12-7pm special guest artists and writers:

– From 10am-6pm Free Comics while supplies last

– Local cartoonists in store signing:

– 10am-6pm Free Comics while supplies last

– In-Store Signing

The book line-up is definitely more kid friendly this year. That isn’t a bad thing though – kids should be targeted. Comic books can work wonders for kids with literacy problems, and create life-long readers.

Trying to work it out with my family members so I can bring my three nephews along for a little while. Or, failing that, pick up a few books for them. I’ll aim at making Things From Another World my home-base – I would love to meet Steve Lieber and Terry Dodson.  Plan on getting there around 11am to scoop up the comics, and then hang out until Lieber shows up. Could also drop by Cosmic Monkey as it’s only a short drive up the street.

The books I’ll probably pick up:

The Sixth Gun

The Tick

Oni Press: Free For All

Books for the nephews:

Toy Story

Shrek and The Penguins

Iron Man/Thor (Eldest Nephew)

DC Kids

If I haven’t convinced you – please, let Hugh Jackman work his magic:

I’d totally get the Mouseguard book for myself. David Peterson does some very beautiful work (or maybe I’m use that as an excuse to look at the Fraggle Rock section).

I know – the Fraggle Rock is a little off-putting. I think my Nephew would love Mouseguard, but the Fraggle Rock would be too “little kid” for him. Mouseguard looks gorgeous though!

It was really a struggle to find something in the books this year that I really wanted to pick up. The Tick!
