Bechdel Test Post #4

Sorry the posts are few and far between lately. I’ve been recently informed of a lay-off at the end of August so the subsequent job search has consumed a lot of my time. I’ll try and work on some regular posting this week. In the interim, enjoy another enlightening Bechdel Post!

MADAME XANADU: Issues #17-23

Since these were all read in one grouping I decided against doing a Bechdel test on each, so they will be measured as a 7 issue unit.

Bechdel Test for Women

1. It has two or more women in it (with names): Marty, Nimue/Madame Xanadu, Betty Reynolds, Morgana, Vivienne

2. At least two women talk to each-other: Nimue/Madame Xanadu and Morgana issue #17. Nimue and Betty Reynolds issue #17. Nimue and Vivienne #18. Nimue and Morgana #19. Nimue and Morgana #20. Marty and Morgana #22. Nimue and Morgana #22. Nimue and Morgana #23. Madame Xanadu and Betty Reynolds #23.

3. There were several conversations which occurred between Nimue and Morgana – about their magical skills, about fate, and about how they should regard mankind. Madame Xanadu/Nimue and Betty Reynolds discussed how they could save her. Nimue/Madame Xanadu and Vivienne discussed their sister Morgana. Marty and Morgana discussed the item – Nimue and Morgana discussed her schemes and past history.

Bechdel Test for Men

1. It has two or more men in it (with names): John Jones, Charles Kowalski, Mr. Delucia, Sonny, Carlo, Curly

3. Kowalski and Delucia talk about the artifacts – as do Sonny and Mr. Delucia. John Jones and Sonny talk about the artifact – as do Delucia, Jones, and Carlo. Curly and Jones banter about fighting and Jones tries to be nonviolent.

*************************************************************

Bechdel Test for Race

1. It DOES NOT have two or more people of color in it (with names):

2. N/A

3. N/A

**********************************************************

Six issues PASS the female test (6/7), three issues PASS the male test (3/7) and none of the issues PASS the Bechdel Test for Race (0/7).

This is the first piece of entertainment I’ve encountered this month that does not fully pass the male test.

***************************************

Bechdel Test for Men

1. It has two or more men in it (with names): Diego, Raoul and Riley.

2. At least two men talk to each-other: Diego and Raoul. Riley and Raoul.

3. Diego and Raoul talk about Riley and their mutual dislike of one-another. Riley and Raoul talk about the upcoming battle and the fact that the vampires will be able to exist in the sunlight for one  day.

*************************************************************

Bechdel Test for Race

1. It DOES have two or more people of color in it (with names): Diego, Raoul

2. At least two people of color talk to each-other: Diego and Raoul.

The book PASSES the female test, PASSES the male test and also PASSES the Bechdel Test for Race. This is contingent on whether or not Diego and Raoul are actually minority characters. Diego is described as having dark, wide eyes, curly hair and full lips. Raoul is a Spanish name – he is never described.
