Catching Fire: Playlist
The best things come in threes, and these Hunger Games playlists are no exception. Dan finished up the second book yesterday so I have the immense pleasure of posting yet another playlist.
This is for the second installment in the series – Catching Fire. As you might be able to tell from the song selection, the overall tempo and tracks are ramped up a bit more than the first playlist The Hunger Games, because the threat from the Capital is greater and the revolution is really starting to kick off.
Again, it flows chronologically with the progression of the book and offers up different perspectives along the way. Sometimes referencing specific passages, sometimes just capturing the emotional landscape of the chapters.
After spending a lot more time with this playlist, I’m starting to think it’s the better of the two. Which means the third will probably be that much more awesome.
Here’s another YouTube video:
Katniss returns to District 12 and attempts to resume life. Much melancholy ensues.
President Snow makes a visit.
Post-visit and the victory train lap around Panem. Lots of snuggle time with Peeta.
The sense of unease grows and the noose tightens around District 12.
Katniss makes her decision to rebel. Again.
Peeta and Katniss snuggle fun time. Again.
The Quarter Quell shake-up. Back to the Games!
Debated whether or not to save this for Mockingjay, but I think it fits the conflict between Katniss and Peeta better at this point.
See the conflict mentioned above.
Cause they’re in a jungle.
You know why.
Some shit is going down.
The sadness of lovers parting.
Tried to find some other Catching Fire playlists to compare and contrast with, but there are no other book specific playlists I can scout up.
I skimmed a few tracks off the original soundtrack because 16 is seeming a bit unwieldy, and I’m finding there are tracks that cover exceptionally well the emotional resonance that I’m aiming for.
The alternates, you ask?
This track just didn’t seem to fit with Catching Fire. Would have been better in The Hunger Games playlist…but it didn’t jive with the tempo there. Huh. I feel like it’s Peeta’s theme song. Hah. Maybe after all these playlists I’ll also pick one theme song for each character. Yikes. One step too far? Descent into madness? Prolly.
Maybe this ends up being a theme song for Katniss as well? Again, it just didn’t seem to jive with the last few tracks in the playlist and I found myself wanting to thin the herd and make the selections really stand out.
ALSO: Debated between Spies and Sparks, both Coldplay tracks. Spies ended up winning out because it had the right tone and spoke more to the games. Winter Song ended as Peeta’s love-pining anthem for their nights together working on the apothecary book. It seemed hopeful and sad at the same time.
Working hard on getting the third and final installment completed – that will take awhile since Dan is relegated to reading the book instead of listening to the audio version.
