12 Nerd Movies in 2012
We already re-capped the nerd highlights of 2011, and as the new year is nearly upon us, it’s time to start getting excited about what it has to offer. Here are 12 nerdy movies (in chronological release date order) that we’re looking forward to.
#1. Underworld Awakening: January 20, 2012.
A total guilty pleasure. Yes, I own all the other Underworld movies. Yes, I watch them on an annual basis. Come on. Kate Beckinsale in tight black leather. Cool werewolf/vampire hybrids. It might not be Oscar worthy, but it will be fun.
#2. The Hunger Games: March 23, 2012.
#3. The Cabin in the Woods: April 13, 2012.
Joss Whedon. Drew Goddard. Chris Hemsworth. Scary movie. Where do I sign up?
#4. The Avengers: May 4, 2012.
All-Star cast. My man Whedon on board with the writing and directing. Comic book adaptation. Explosions. Tight suits.
#5. Snow White and the Huntsman: June 1, 2012.
Chris Hemsworth. Charlize Theron. Nick Frost. I’m digging this revitalization of fairy tales recently – with some efforts being better than others. This looks like a more serious adaptation as opposed to the comical and musical Mirror, Mirror which will be released in March.
#6. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: June 22, 2012.
While it doesn’t boast an all-star cast, the source content was riveting enough that I’m anticipating watching the flick. I posted a review of the book here. Hoping this is one our book-to-film-adaptation club decides on.
#7. Brave: June 22, 2012.
I’m a sucker for a red head. And anything Scottish. This one came out of nowhere and the trailer is what really sold me. Pixar is known for quality. How can this possibly be bad?
#8. The Amazing Spiderman: July 3, 2012.
Feeling somewhat iffy about this one. The trailer looks intriguing, but I’m not especially sold on this revamping of the films so soon. The selling point? I will pay money to see anything starring Emma Stone. That is fact.
#9. The Dark Knight Rises: July 20, 2012
These are not my favorite superhero books or movies, but this series is compelling. Nolan manages to rally a stellar cast of people around him. He writes compelling narratives and has a good eye for the dark, seedy underbelly of the world, which is pitch perfect for this content. The trailer was thrilling and filled with nice, tasty bits for the audience to titter about on the interwebs. I’m intrigued.
#10. ParaNorman: August 17, 2012.
This has absolutely nothing to do with my friend’s animation studio here in Portland having worked on this flick. But that certainly helps. They’ve also delivered a fantastic trailer. The “Season of the Witch” song + no dialogue. That’s all you really need from a trailer. Also, zombies.
#11. World War Z: December 21, 2012.
Speaking of zombies. This will be quite epic. One of the few films to follow a zombie invasion and apocalypse on global scale. Really looking forward to seeing some of my favorite parts of the zombie genre explored with a big budget.
#12. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: December 14, 2012.
Have you seen the trailer? Do I really need to say anything else? You’re gonna watch it. You’re gonna love it. That trailer! Why would they release it a year in advance. It’s just mean. It makes our nerd hearts weep. At least it will be released before the end of the world.
